5 Reasons Why Abstract Art Painting is Important

The mention of abstract art immediately makes most of us think of non-representational lines, shapes, colors, and patterns. While many people, both in the past and even now, consider it meaningless, or an escape from the technicalities of painting, this couldn’t be any further away from the truth. Those who understand color theory, brush strokes, and other techniques can tell you it is as legitimate as any other art style. If you are still not convinced, let’s try to change your mind with this blog.

What is Abstract Art?

Abstract art is an art style that doesn’t depict visual reality based on accuracy. Rather, it focuses on non-representational aspects and makes use of shapes, objects, colors, etc instead of a concrete subject to represent the emotions of the artist. In such artworks, different aspects like texture, color, depth, and layering in the artwork hold more importance. This art style took birth somewhere around the 20th Century and was considered to be a very radical approach to art at that time.

Importance of Abstract Art Painting

People often question the importance of abstract artwork, given it's so hard to decipher and might not hold much meaning for many. However, here are our top 5 reasons that make abstract art so important.

Liberates artist’s expression

Abstract art is not tied down by the visual realities of our world—it goes beyond representative subject matters. Thus, it allows artists to express their innermost feelings without having to limit themselves to the previously set rules, traditions, or even the outside world in general. This is especially true for informational abstractionism, where artists focus more on using colors and shapes to convey their emotions. For example, a warm color tone like yellow may be used to represent a more cheerful emotion, whereas a blue color tone may be used to express grief or sadness.

Forms unique connections with viewers

Something very special about abstract art paintings is that it does not limit to forming one chain of connection. For example, anyone who views a portrait of a sad elephant will know that the elephant is sad. However, this is not the case with abstract art. Due to the lack of a concrete subject, it invokes different emotions in different viewers based on their ways of perceiving the artwork. It affects every individual differently and thus allows them to explore new perspectives for the same artwork. You can also think of it as a means to expand the horizons of your thoughts, which encourages you to always have an open mind to life and creativity alike.

Broadens the definition of art

Abstract art styles such as Tachisme were developed during the post-World War II phase, especially intended to break free from the existing models of art. Such artworks break the shackles of traditional art rules and question the relationship between art and the world as a whole. These questions, raised over time, force people to redefine the idea of beauty, aesthetics, and even art. Thus it allows a more experimental approach to art, thereby expanding the existing boundaries of what may or may not be considered artistic.

Encourages involvement of viewers

Unlike figurative art, abstractionism compels viewer engagement. It pushes them to pause for a moment, think, and sometimes rethink the idea behind the artwork. This also adds more weight to the importance of a viewer when it comes to abstract art because the subject and the concept of an abstract artwork are not easily recognizable. It requires them to engage with the piece on a deeper level to form an emotional connection and only then is the purpose of an abstract artist truly achieved.

It’s a self-renewing style of art

We live in a world that is changing rapidly and so are the ways of portraying it through art. As abstract art is derived more from emotions than simply just what the eyes can see, it also keeps changing with time. Artists use it to depict emotions and feelings rather than just a tangible subject, and thus it automatically renews the definitions, texture, and style of representation. It renews not only with time but also with every new artist that it comes in contact with. Each one of them has added their own elements to this form of art to make it non-representational in a very representational manner.

Abstract Art is a Journey of Discovery

Elements of abstractionism come to a painting when an artist draws what their mind's eyes show them, rather than what they see with their physical eyes. Allowing their emotions to drive the narrative takes the artist on a journey of self-discovery which lets them see both themselves and the world around them in a new light with every artwork. It is a path that steers them away from the familiar and thus adds a new dimension to their perspective.

While this style of art wasn’t truly appreciated at the time of its appearance, people have now become more receptive to it, because it isn’t just an artwork, but a journey and an irreplaceable experience of art.
